Miracle of the Pen

Miracle of the Pen

Everyday we write something, whether a list of some kind, a small note, or a book. The process of writing is a wondrous ability that we humans enjoy. But let’s look at what the instrument of writing is called in the Quran and look at its meaning.

is the Arabic word for “pen,” the instrument through which we write. There are thousands of different styles and colors and shapes of pens, and they range in cost from a dime to several thousand dollars. Some are made of wood, some plastic, and some of pure gold, among these you’ll find some studded with diamonds. Whatever form they may take, the pen remains an enduring symbol of communication, the means by which thoughts, ideas, and information are moved from one source to its recipients, a system that God created for us. It’s also the way by which He lets His creation know His will.

So important is the “pen,” God Himself makes an oath with it in defense of the Prophet’s soundness of mind and tremendous character: “Nun. By the Pen, and what they inscribe, you are not [O Muhammad], by the grace of your Lord, a madman. And yours shall be an unfailing reward. And you indeed are of tremendous character” (Quran, 68:1-4). According to commentators of the Quran, God’s choice of swearing “by the pen” here, is actually quite profound. The pen, in the visible and unseen realm, serves several important functions: The pen records, at the hands of angelic scribes, the deeds of people, whether the deeds are big or small. Nothing of what we do (physically or mentally) escapes the inscription of the pen (“Then the Book [of deeds] will be set out, and you will see the sinners frightened of what it holds. And they will say, ‘Woe to us! What kind of book is this! It omits nothing small nor great, but all is accounted for!’ They will find all that they had ever done displayed before them, and your Lord will wrong no one” (Quran, 18:49)).

The “pen” is also applied to all the decrees of God, which are infinite, beyond enumeration: “And if all the trees on earth were pens, and the sea [were ink] with seven more seas to supply it, the words of God could not be exhausted. Indeed, God is Mighty, Wise” (Quran, 31:27). The “words” of God alludes to God’s knowledge, power in determining the affairs of all things, known to us and unknown (whether in the earth, in our lives and bodies, or in the deepest caverns of the land or the distant planets and stars, or any of the unseen planes of existence known only to God).

“Say, ‘If the sea were ink for the words of my Lord, the sea would surely run out before the words of My Lord would ever run out, even if we brought another one like it for replenishment’” (Quran, 18:109). A Quran commentator said about this verse, “However astonishing and far-reaching the narratives granted in Scripture may be, they are less than a drop in the ocean, for His attributes, wisdom, and knowledge are without limit.” The very first revelation of the Quran mentions the pen as among the blessings of God: Read in the name of your Lord who created; He created man from a clinging clot. Read, for your Lord is the Most Generous, who taught by the pen, who taught man what he did not know (Quran, 96:1-5). The original meaning of “qalam” in Arabic is “pruning” or “cutting” something out from something bigger, as in trimming a tree or bush or cutting one’s nails.

Pilgrimmage (Hajj)

Pilgrimmage (Hajj) – The Journey of a Lifetime

The annual pilgrimage to Makkah – the Hajj – is an obligation only for those who are physically and financially able to perform it. Nevertheless, about two million people go to Makkah each year from every corner of the globe, providing a unique opportunity for those of different nations to meet one another. Although Makkah is always filled with visitors, the annual Hajj begins in the twelfth month of the Islamic year (which is lunar, not solar, meaning that Hajj and Ramadan rotate throughout every season). Pilgrims wear special clothes: simple garments which strip away distinctions of class and culture, so that all stand equal before God.

The rites of the Hajj, which are of Abrahamic origin, include circling the Ka’ba seven times, and going seven times between the mountains of Safa and Marwa as Hagar did during her search for water. Then the pilgrims stand together on the wide plain of Arafat and join in prayers for God’s forgiveness.

In previous centuries the Hajj was an arduous undertaking. Today, however, Saudi Arabia provides millions of people with water, modern transport, and the most up-to-date health facilities.

The close of the Hajj is marked by a festival, the Eid al-Adha, which is celebrated with prayers, slaughtering an animal to feed the needy, and the exchange of gifts in Muslim communities everywhere. This, and the Eid al-Fitr, a celebration commemorating the completion of the fasting of Ramadan, are the two holidays celebrated by Muslims worldwide.

Testimony (Shahada)

Testimony (Shahadah) – Declaration of Faith

“I bear witness that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, the One and Only, without any partner. And I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and His Messenger.”

The declaration of faith consists of two distinct parts, the absolute belief in the Oneness of Allah (God) and the belief that the Prophet Muhammad, a mortal human being was the last Messenger of Allah.

Islam’s fundamental belief is the Oneness of God. This is the essence of Islam.  Therefore the acknowledgement and ‘bearing witness’ of this is the key to the Muslim faith.  A Muslim accepts Allah as the only God, and only Master, Lord and Ruler with no partner sharing in any way His Being, Powers and Attributes. He is One; He is Unique; He is Almighty and Self-Sustaining. He has been alive forever, and will be alive forever.

A Muslim believes in Allah as the Supreme Ruler and therefore submits to His commands as a form of worship. In fact, everything that exists in the universe submits to His will.

The belief in the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) as the servant and final Messenger of Allah completes one’s faith. The Prophet Muhammad was the last of a line of prophets and messengers sent to deliver the same message given to all the prophets, beginning with Adam (peace be upon him).  That message has consistently been to worship Allah, the One and Only God, Creator of the Universe, and the Master of Destiny.

Calculate Zakat

calculate-zakat

Zakat is one of the five pillars of Islam. The Holy Quran says, “Indeed, those who believe and do righteous deeds and establish prayer and give zakat will have their reward with their Lord, and their will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve.”  Surat Al-Baqarah:277.  Calculating your Zakat is easy with the Zakat Calculator.  Click Here to get started.

Zakat FAQ

Zakat is the third pillar of Islam. This charitable giving represents the unbreakable bond between members of our community. The Mosque Foundation has been providing Zakat collection and distribution services to the community for many years. These services offer community members a practical way to fulfill this pillar of Islam as well as help many families in need. Below you will find brief answers to frequently asked questions about Zakat.

Q1. When am I required to pay Zakat?

A1. Zakat is due after one Hijri, lunar, year starting from either the first day you acquired the amount of Nisab or the day you paid your Zakat last year. Zakat becomes obliged upon a Muslim after a time span of one lunar year passes while they are in possession of the Nisab. If you always possess the minimum Nisab value, then Zakat is due once every year at a date of your choosing.

Q2. What is Nisab?

A2.Nisab is the minimum amount of wealth required obliging you to pay Zakat. It is estimated at 3 ounces of pure gold, valued at $5343.

Q3. If the value of what I own varies throughout the year, how do I calculate the Zakat I owe?

A3. Choose a specific date of the lunar calendar of every year, calculate the total value of your Zakatable wealth on that date, and give 2.5% of it (or the rate that applies to the type of wealth you own).

Q4. What is Zakatable wealth?

A4. Zakatable wealth is what you own, whether in your possession or with others, except for what you use, such as your house, car, clothes, and business equipment. Also, Zakatable wealth is what remains with you after meeting the needs and expenses of yourself and your family. It is not based on the income you make during the year. Rather, it is based on what remains after you take care of expenses. This wealth can be in the form of cash, gold, stocks, business commodities or other wealth.

Q5. Must I own all my Zakatable wealth for a complete lunar year before I have to pay Zakat on it?

A5. No. You must only possess the value of Nisab for the whole year. Therefore, as long as you have a minimum amount of Nisab for the year, you evaluate your Zakatable wealth on your Zakat due date, regardless of when you acquired this wealth or part of it.

Q6. How do I calculate the Zakat I owe?

A6. The Mosque Foundation provides you with a Zakat worksheet including most common Zakatable assets for American Muslims. This worksheet is based on respected Fiqh references and reviewed by Muslim scholars. However, it does not include all types of Zakatable items. You may need to consult a Muslim scholar for other items. You can calculate your Zakat using our calculator and pay it online at www.mosquefoundation.org or using the return envelope attached here so that we may disperse it to qualified recipients.

Q7. I loaned a friend $3,000, and it is due in six months, do I have to pay Zakat on this amount?

A7. Although the amount of the loan is not yet in your possession, you still own it. You are required to pay Zakat on it if you expect it back (good loan). However, if the loan is due and you asked for it and the borrower cannot pay you back (bad loan), you are not required to pay Zakat on it until it is in your possession. Once you receive it, you pay Zakat on it for one year only.

Q8. If I have a grocery store, what Zakat do I have to pay on it?

A8. You do not have to pay Zakat on your equipment, such as refrigerators, cashier machines, and other useable equipment and tools. Even if you own the store property, you do not have to pay Zakat on it. However, you must pay Zakat on the wholesale price of all inventories and on other Zakatable assets mentioned in the worksheet.

Q9. If I own a service provider company which has computers and other equipment that I use, how do I pay my Zakat on it?

A9. There is no Zakat due on the value of the equipment you mentioned, since they are used for business. But because you own this company, you should combine your Zakatable wealth with that of the company. The Zakat would be payable on what you own in Zakatable wealth after a full year of meeting your expenses and those of the company.
